Wearable technology is increasing common, including Apple watches and Fitbits that measure the user’s heart rate, but at present the technology has largely been harnessed in the consumer world, with limited penetration in the trades.

Now Hultafors’ workwear brand Snickers has revealed ‘Tracker 1’ – its first prototype in wearable technology. The Work Trousers include a chip that enables the user to monitor work place noise levels, heat conditions and knee impact.

Snickers began testing wearable tech with 100 craftsmen across five countries last year. The tests saw a wearable device installed on a pair of 6-series work trousers, collecting data.

A recent study carried out in Scandinavia showed more than 50% of the professional craftsmen there are cutting corners at work and don’t use the available health and safety equipment as they should.

“The study shows that 6 out of 10 craftsmen are suffering from pain in their knees,” said David Clark, MD of the Hultafors Group UK. “So we see that there is definitely room for improving their wellbeing beyond just knee protection – and our ‘Smart Workwear’ is one way.

“We are well known for our KneeGuard System, 37.5 Fabric Technology and technical functionality, but the integration of ‘smart’ wearable technology into our clothing shows the extent to which we are looking at working clothes and wellbeing on site in a completely new way.”
